Centersfor Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) uses hospital compare data to improve the quality care delivered by the hospital. Consumers are able to compare the services offered, patient survey results, timely and effective care, complications, and deaths through the hospital compare data. I compared the data for Virginia Hospital Center, Inova Fairfax Hospital, and Washington Hospital Center. Virginia Hospital Center has a higher patient satisfaction results than both Inova Fairfax Hospital and Washington Hospital Center.
Virginia Hospital is an acute care hospital. They are able to receive lab results electronically to register cardiac patients, stroke care patients, and nursing care patients. Inova Fairfax Hospital is also an acute care hospital. They are able to provides emergency services, receives lab results electronically, tracks patients lab results, test, and transfer referrals electronically. They are also able to register cardiac patients, stroke care patients, nursing care patients, and multispecialty care patients. Washington Hospital Center is also an acute care hospital and also provides the same services like Inova Fairfax Hospital, but they do not have a multispecialty care registry.
The patient satisfaction results for patients, who reported that yes, they were given information about what to do during their recovery at home was 86% in Virginia Hospital Center, 85% in Inova Fairfax Hospital, and 84% in Washington Hospital Center. 85% of patients would recommend Virginia Hospital, 76% of patients would recommend Inova Fairfax Hospital, and 70 % would recommend Washington Hospital Center have.
45% of patients in Inova Fairfax Hospital reported that the area around their room was "Always" quiet at night, 53% at Washington Hospital Center, and 64% at Virginia Hospital Center. Inova Fairfax Hospital and Washington Hospital Center had lower scores in explaining the medicines to the patients before giving it to them than Virginia Hospital Center.
Although Virginia Hospital Center does not provide emergency services and are not able to track patients’ lab results electronically between visits, their patient satisfaction results shown to be very impressive compared to the other two hospitals. Virginia Hospital Center has received numerous awards and recognition including being named one of the nation’s 100 top hospitals by Truven Health Analytic.

Which hospital would you go to receive the best possible health care?

  1. This really surprised me because I'm always hearing about how great Inova is, even though I haven't been to any of them personally. I wonder if the fact that Virginia Hospital does not provide emergency care has anything to do with their higher ratings. Emergency care is often fast-paced and patients are seen depending on how serious their reason for visiting is. This can leave patients feeling unimportant or unsatisfied with their visit.

  2. I agree with Jenaca. I believe that not having an ER helps them with customer satisfaction. The only bad experiences I have personally had in a hospital has been while waiting in the Emergency Room. I too haven't been to either hospital but feel that the ER is a major player.
